A few paragraphs and then:
“Now, about the Creaseys. My great granddad, Lloyd, came from Virginia (Dad said it was a part of the state which is now West Virginia). Lloyd’s mother came with her family, either 11 children and grandpa was 13 yrs old or there 13 children and he was 11. They said in an ox cart, (I wondered if it wasn’t the same as the pioneers went to California in). It was approximately 1830 because grandpa Lloyd died in 1909 (just before Walter was born)and he was in his 90th year.
They stopped in Illinois for a couple of years and a couple of the girls married and stayed there.
I am not certain whether they homesteaded or how they got their land. I thought it was in Lewis Cty, Missouri. I wrote to the county authority in Marion County, but they have any record of it. I wrote to Lewis County, but never heard from them.
One distinguishing fact was that all her children except grandpa Lloyd had biblical names.
Her father in law came with them. He had been in the war and had lost his toes. Grandpa Lloyd told dad about how he hopped along on his heels.
The youngest son was Joel and he was three yrs old. I’m not sure whether that was when they left or when they got to Missouri.
Grandpa Lloyd told of how they unintentionally left Joel asleep beside a fence when he had been watching some goats and grandpa had to go back after him.
Charley Creasy’s dad was one of the sons. I never heard of any others.
Grandpa Larkin Carter and Cynthia Ann Creasey were married approximately on April 3, 1876. I’m not sure where, maybe Quincy.
Grandma Creasy was a Merrill. She had a couple of nephews who used to stay with grandma and grandpa Carter before dad was old enough to help with the work. Grandma and grandpa Creasy had 2 daughter, Aunt Elizabeth and Grandma and at least four sons. Uncle John, who never married and used to come to our place. Uncle Jim who lived in Oklahoma and who had several children but I never met any of them. Uncle Silas who lived with Grandpa to the last.
I went with grandma to visit great-grandpa in the spring before he died. That was in 1909. I remember it well, as the Mississippi River was out of its banks and we went from Woodland to Quincy on the Burlington and back on the OK ro OL to Maywood. Both times the water was over the track and a man walked ahead of the train to be sure the track wasn’t washed out.
We moved from Missouri in 1919 and I never knew much of what went on after that. Grandma Chthia [sic] died in 1920 and Grandpa Larkin in 1936. Grandma Laura had been married to Dr. Raines after having been a music teacher for years”.
